There are so many great shows on TV at the moment, encouraging us to DIY around the home. Many of us watch the shows knowing we could never be bothered (who has time for that?). On the other hand, some of us feel empowered when we watch Fixer Upper or Property Brothers and we just KNOW we can do a great job too.
DIY is fine, as long as you know what you’re doing. But when it comes to the electrical in your home, we recommend you not attempt it yourself. Why? Here are three reasons:
1. It Is The Law
If you don’t have an electrical permit, you aren’t legally allowed to complete any major electrical work on your property. Changing a light bulb is fine and if you’re simply replacing certain light fixtures and switches, you might not require a permit. But re-routing wires or fiddling around with safety switches are not okay. According to the Electrical Safety Authority, an electrical “permit” needs to be filed within 48 hours of when electrical work commences.
Along with this, your electrical work must also pass an Electrical Safety Authority inspection and adhere to the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. The inspection will cover any underground wiring, wiring to the meter, circuit wiring and installation of outlet boxes. If you prefer not to have to worry about going through all the permit applications, it makes sense to hire a professional electrical contractor instead who can do it for you.
2. They Know What They’re Doing
Your home has many electrical connections and appliances. Can you name them all by having a quick look around? Your electrician can. They know what they’re doing. They have done it all before and they are qualified and trained in every aspect of electrical. If you’re renovating, it’s probably the perfect time to update – and that includes your electrical wiring, light switches, and broken appliances. Your electrician can do everything from updating an electrical switchboard to installing a new Smart Fridge; replacing your light switches, to fixing cracked or broken plug sockets.
3. Saving Money
A large number of DIY projects fail and as a result, professional organizations benefit. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you can spend more money getting things fixed, than you would have spent hiring a professional. Go straight to the source and choose an experienced electrical contractor. This is particularly the case when it comes to electrical work. If you do the wrong thing, you’re not only risking your safety but the safety of your family.
Electrical work is dangerous. In fact, being an electrician is considered to be one of the 25 most dangerous jobs in the world. Between 2008 and 2017, there were 54 reported electrical-related fatalities in Ontario alone, with 34% of these occurring at home. So why would you take the risk? Electricians are prepared for anything that could go wrong. They are trained to deal with a number of situations, from short circuits to fires and most important – they are trained to know what to touch, what to avoid, and what to do in an emergency.
